Comic vs. Tragic

June 27 & 29, 2008

Andrea Pinyan

Birth Place: Ridgewood, NJ

Education: BA at Alfred University

One World Symphony Soprano, Assistant Stage Director, Stage Manager

1. Are any of your family members musicians? If so, what do they do?
Dad sang in Baptist churches and glee clubs growing up. My sister Jen played clarinet and oboe in h.s. band. Brother Jeffrey never trained on anything (unless you count a year of elementary school trumpet), but has a great ear for plucking stuff out on piano. My sister Carolyn sang in choirs and choruses through college. And of course, my seven siblings and I all played recorder for third grade music class.

2. What has been the highlight of your One World Symphony career to date?
Singing in the John Craven premiere To a New Day

3. What would you say is your favourite piece of music?
(favourite? what are you, Canadian? here, we spell it "favorite")
That's a semi-ridiculous question. But I will answer that I love Rachmaninoff's rhapsody on a theme by Paganini, along with various musical theatre pieces and classic rock songs, like Queen's "Somebody to Love."

4. What's the best thing about One World Symphony?
Uh... Just kidding. After the big chorus concerts, which tend to end with great passion, I always feel this sublime, lifting joy, from the time the piece ends until somewhere during the applause.

5. What music do you listen to in the car or subway?
I actually have neither a portable music playing device nor a car. I read on the subway. But if I did have one, I would listen to mostly musical theatre and rock.

6. What is your favourite drink?
Ah, another semi-ridiculous question. I'm a creature of many moods, and my favorite always depends on mood. Let's say...wine.

7. When you do have some free time, how do you relax?
Love to travel, if it's a lot of free time. Love to read, shop, take a walk or just daydream if it's a little time.

8. Why do you continue to perform with One World Symphony when you can perform with other ensembles that would offer more financial benefits?
The positives are that there's not a hierarchical structure, where people wield rank. There's minimal politics. There's always an emphasis on new works, which has always appealed to me.

9. If you weren't a musician what would you be?
Um...an office temp?

10. Why would you recommend to other musicians and public to participate with One World Symphony?
Because they will have fun and be amazed at the caliber of work that can be produced so quickly.

11. What are your hobbies?
Reading. Cooking. Trivia. Going to theatre. Surfing the internet. Traveling. Fantasizing about having tons of money.
