Otello, Verdi’s penultimate opera, exposes human nature’s willingness to feed on gossip, distrust, and scandal. Richard Strauss and Hector Berlioz paint the madness of despair that drove the fair maiden to her watery grave in Ophelia Lieder. Without words, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture captures the play’s spirit — the turbulence, romance and pathos. Young lovers are entangled in the turmoil of two rival political parties in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Bellini’s telling of the ancient Italian tale which inspired Shakespeare.
