Camille Saint-Saëns: Samson
and Delilah (Scenes)
George Frideric Handel: Saul (Scenes)
Jihwan Kim: David and Goliath (Scenes
-- 2007 World Premiere)
The new year begins with heartfelt and stirring
operatic scenes of three timeless anti-heroes from the Hebrew
scriptures. Experience Samson and Delilah’s
lyrical beauty, sensual power and frenzied debauchery which
precede Samson’s ultimate revenge as God answers his
prayers for enough strength to bring the temple crashing
down on his enemy. Never did Handel give such sublime voice
and pathos to a nation’s grief than his oratorio, Saul,
such as the moving lament over the bodies of the slain King
Saul and his son, Jonathon. Kim’s world premiere David
and Goliath questions whether Goliath was actually defeated
by David, or he was the true selfless hero who sacrificed
his life to fulfill Yaweh’s prophecy. Click
