Break free from the strangling confines of society and the arbitrary demands of dictators with One World Symphony’s season finale.

Verdi's Don Carlo rebelled against the Spanish Inquisition, and over 140 years later, Valentin Silvestrov takes up the baton in Last Love, in which the Ukrainian composer has been protesting the current Russian invasion. Since the premiere in 1810, Beethoven's Egmont has captured the fire of revolutionaries on the quest for liberty. Inspired by the award-winning drama and Percy Bysshe Shelley's sonnet, Sung Jin Hong's Breaking Bad — Ozymandias 2.0 explores the potential consequences of throwing all the rules to the winds and doing what we want because we like it. When Walt transformed into Heisenberg, his fatal flaw became himself — his hubris in pursuit of personal glory. Are we all guilty of "breaking bad" to make ourselves feel good and free?

"Yes, Walter White certainly fell from grace in the TV series, but now Hong was able to make an opera sound like the television show... A heart-breaking work of staggering ingenuity... And yet, that looming sense of duality in the context of the 'Bitch Aria' pervades the entire landscape of his composition, intertwining music and voice with inventive structure and self-reflexive themes... Sung Jin Hong may have created something of a masterpiece." – Ian Holubiak, Classicalite

Concert length approximately 100 minutes without intermission. Program may be subject to change.
